While We Wait . . .

If you’re like me then you love the magical and mystical genre that is fantasy. I love Game of Thrones and I like House of the Dragon. And while season 2 of the GOT prequel is just beyond the horizon, I’ve fallen in love with some television shows that deserve a shout out.

The Magicians

The Magicians is based on a book series of the same name. The show aired on Syfy a few years ago and I am sad to say that I was unaware of this hidden gem until recently. I’m obsessed with this show to say the very least. It’s about a group of graduate students who study at Brakebills University where they study illusionary, traveling (teleporting to different worlds or areas in one world), telepathy, etc. Much like GOT the show has its darker moments (i.e., sexual assault, violence, mention of suicide), but it has its more joyous moments as well.

The students don’t always get along as they all have different reasons as to why they want to use magic, how it should be used, etc. But when there is a big bad to fight (and there are lots of them) there is no one else you’d want fighting that fight than these foul-mouthed, flawed young adults. Whether it be to save the world, stop a genocide, save a kingdom, or even just to rob a bank - the Physical Kids gang is going to save the day and it will be entertaining.

The Wheel of Time

If I haven’t talked about this show before I’m so sorry for the delay. Based on a book series of the same name, The Wheel of Time is a lot like GOT except almost all of the main characters have known each other for a long time. They aren’t wealthy, they don’t own land, or hold any titles, but the setting is a lot like GOT just a little more fun. The Wheel of Time centers on a group of villagers as they quest through a world filled with magic, hunters, deadly beasts, and so much more. The villagers are a select group chosen by a high priestess-type character where one of those villagers will become ‘The Dragon Reborn’ and bring peace to the world and all the evils in it.

All of the villagers have some type of magic within them whether they know about it or not. They are all destined for greatness in their own ways. The reason I love this show is because of group’s friendship. There are 2 seasons (so far, I believe season 3 is in the works) season 1 starts with them all together in their village and throughout their journey they all start to drift apart physically and even emotionally. It becomes abundantly clear during season 2 that these characters are better together than apart because their friendship makes them stronger. Watching them separately is a struggle when you know how much better the characters are together.

Galavant

This is much more light-hearted than the other two shows. Galavant is like a Disney movie, except pretty much all of the songs are hilarious and amazing. It’s about the titular character Galavant who is a famous knight who sinks into a depression after his girlfriend leaves him for a ruthless king. When a young princess requests his help to save her parents and kingdom from that same ruthless king, he goes into revenge mode which begins an amazing journey to save the princess’ kingdom and for Galavant to get his girl back.

That’s it. No second paragraph, just watch the video and fall instantly in love with the show like I did.
