If You Like . . ., Then You'll Love . . .!

Have you ever watched a show or a movie that reminded you of another show or movie? Maybe not so much in plot similarities, but more in dialogue or the characters. I’ve been noticing this a lot lately in the shows I’ve been watching, so here is a list of shows that strongly reminded me of other shows.

The Other Two & Starstruck: Colin from Accounts

I’ve talked about The Other Two before and about how much I love this show (RIP for its cancellation), but I’ve never talked about Starstruck. Starstruck is about a New Zealand woman who has a one-night stand with a Marvel-like actor (which she laughed off when he told her what he did for a living). Both shows have the main characters expressing their most awkward aspects of their human personalities. They’re all flawed human beings and kind of terrible people, all while being somewhat stupid. Both are hilarious!

And there is Colin from Accounts, oh my goodness this Australian show is amazing. Starring real-life couple Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall whose characters get into a fender-bender that involves a scrappy looking dog and their lives are intertwined into who should take responsibility for the injured dog. Following the accident, the pair become unexpected roommates and somewhat friendly with each other even though one of them owes the other $12,000 (for saving the dog). They develop a close relationship and find themselves valuing each other's feelings, but don’t worry there are plenty of laughs to be had and plenty of awkward situations including humans peeing on furniture, showing each other their private body parts, and meeting a certain amazingly horrible mother.

Desperate Housewives: Bad Sisters

Desperate Housewives has been off the air for over a decade now, but the show has stood the test of time and the mystery of every season is still very enticing. The series starts off with one complex question: why did Mary Alice Young (whose life was seemingly perfect) kill herself? After her four closest friends find a letter that was addressed to Mary Alice and was received the day of her death with a letter that says that they know what Mary Alice did, they begin to unravel the secret her family has been hiding from their only child and the life they left behind before moving to the wealthy neighborhood of Wisteria Lane.

In Bad Sisters, a similar mystery is afoot. However, the person who died almost everyone wanted dead because he was the worst. A mentally abusive psychopath named John Paul was strongly hated by his sisters-in-law because they knew how horrible he was to their sister and her daughter. Each one had a motive for killing John Paul (JP) and when life-insurance agents come knocking on the sisters doors’ asking them questions about JP and their relationship with him it is revealed through flashbacks how much the sisters were willing to give up in order to get rid of this wanker.

Full Circle: Collateral

Full Circle was one of those shows that I needed to read a synopsis for an episode after watching it because I was so confused. I didn’t understand why the ‘criminals’ were doing what they were doing, why they needed to ‘complete the circle,’ and what crimes Denis Quad and Claire Danes had committed to incur the wrath of this powerful African family. To be honest I couldn’t wait for it to be over because I was so confused, but . . . .

Collateral from 2018 also had a conspiracy theory-type mystery that revolved around people who illegally emigrated from another country to the United Kingdom. Starring Carey Mulligan as a detective trying to find out why a specific pizza delivery man was killed after dropping off a delivery at a certain location and what his boss may have had to do with the terrible crime. A much easier story to follow, this show reminded me a lot of Full Circle but so much more enjoyable!
