I Went in Blind!

I don’t know how I feel about this movie (Five Nights at Freddy’s) or my experience.

My Movie Going Experience

I’ve been known to have a few anxiety attacks in movie theaters. It started when Dear Evan Hansen was released in theaters. I was watching the trailers and this kid in a hoodie kept moving in and out of the theater. He kept looking around, and just before the movie started I thought ‘I’m gonna go.’ I would later tell my family about this incident later and I would lie about telling them that I got a refund for my snacks and the thickets. It happened a few times after this but the difference is I didn’t leave the theater. My weird anxiety logic tells me ‘if they have popcorn or some type of snack they won’t hurt me.’ Because why would someone shell out $10+ worth of snacks if they have a violent intention.

When I went to see Five Nights at Freddy’s I had a few mini-anxiety attacks. There were two people sitting in a front row and they kept getting up. First time they left and came back I figured ‘oh they went to the restroom.’ Then they kept looking at their phones. Normally I would be irritated with that but in my mind they were waiting for a text that said “It’s Go Time!” And the fact that my theater was packed did not help my anxiety. So, so far not off to a great start.

On With the Show

So my anxiety has since ended but I’m still paying close attention to the kids up front (THAT KEEP GETTING UP & MOVING SEATS!). I’m about night one into Five Nights at Freddy’s and I’m finally enjoying my snack and paying attention to the plot. As a horror movie, it did everything it was supposed to. It had jump scares, ghostly possessed life-sized dolls (animatronic life-sized robots), and a serial killer element. What’s not to love?! . . . I have some notes.

There was a group of kids sitting behind me and they wouldn’t shutup! And for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why there were so many people in the theater. Or how they knew the names of the animatronic dolls. I think the final kicker was when the kids in the theater freaked out and literally started to dance when the credits rolled and the closing song played. This is when I realized this wasn’t an original story, that Five Nights at Freddy’s was based on a video game or something. The next night I looked it up and saw that it was based on a video game with the same premise and the same serial killer. Now I am constantly asking myself: is the reason I’m indifferent to this movie because it’s not an original IP (intellectual property)? Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t really have a bad time (anxiety attacks aside). But it seemed to drag on quite a bit. I was relieved it was only for an hour and fifty minutes long. If you are interested in watching this movie it is still available in theaters or you can watch it on Peacock (I seriously considered leaving the theater to stream it at home, but I love movie theater popcorn and soda as expensive as it is.)
