She Did Everything Perfectly

I’m not even joking, I think if I were in her situation I would’ve done the same thing.

I Wasn’t Expecting a Thriller

Going into Immaculate (starring Sydney Sweeney), I was expecting a horror movie about a demonic pregnancy that was immaculate in a way. However, as the movie progressed it became clear that it was less about a demons coming back from Hell but rather about a cult of nuns who were looking to bring God to the modern-day world (I can’t remember how, but I’m pretty sure this all takes place in or around our current year 2024) through scientific means that were mistaken as a miracle.

I’m gonna try not to give a lot a way, but I have to say everything Sweeney’s character did - I was on board with 100% (I’m being serious). Here are some examples:

It’s not a spoiler to reveal the Sweeney’s virgin nun becomes pregnant ‘immaculately.’ However there is a scene where Sweeney is attacked shortly after discovering her pregnancy by a fellow nun who says something along the lines of “it should’ve been me.” Sweeney is almost killed by this nun, and when she is eventually saved by other nuns she is given an ultrasound to make sure the baby is okay (on an ultrasound machine that looks like its from the 1980s). The head priest and the convent doctor say the baby is okay. But Sweeney says flat out “but I’m not okay” (I was just attacked). And then the priest and the doctor kind of shoulder it off like ‘yeah, but the baby is okay and that’s what’s important not you.’ In the theater as soon as Sweeney made the comment about her not being okay. I viciously shook my head in agreement, like ‘YES, she’s not okay!’

Shortly, after this quote. She mentioned wanting to see an OB/GYN at the hospital in town (they’re in rural Italy, forgot to mention that). Again, I was thinking ‘YES! Go to the hospital with modern medical technology and maybe a female OB who knows more about pregnancy (than a convent doctor who only takes care of old dying nuns) and could maybe figure out how and why you’re pregnant.’ But the priest and the male (forgot to mention that, too) convent doctor quickly vetoed that and got all offended because she dared wanting to go into a city hospital to get care from a listened doctor in the field of pregnancy, etc.

Later, once Sweeney’s character realizes that this convent and the people running it are crazy and that the pregnancy might not be such a miracle. Her character decides to that she needs to get out of there. But because it’s a pretty difficult place to escape (should’ve been a warning to her before she got pregnant), she uses her ‘miracle’ pregnancy and the fear that the others have of her losing it to her advantage. She takes a dead chicken and uses its blood to make it look like she’s about to miscarry (or in the process of miscarrying). The priest and his assistant (?) take Sweeney in their car to the hospital in the city. ‘THANK YOU, GOD!’ But she is quickly found out and she is brought back to the convent and is soon told how she became pregnant. (I’m not going to reveal that part, but it is gross.)

One last thing, then I’ll wrap it up. It wouldn’t be a horror/thriller-type movie without a little bloodshed. SPOILERS AHEAD: In the last half-hour or so of the movie, Sweeney is almost at the end of her pregnancy and is without a lot of faith. But she makes one last effort. While getting one final ultrasound from the head nun, she takes a big metallic cross from her nightstand and whacks the nun in the back of the head with it and before trying to escape for the last time. She finishes the nun off by killing her with the cross. It may seem morbid and most definitely anti-God. But after seeing what Sweeney’s character went through: the pregnancy, the attacks, the lost faith, and all the support she supposedly had from the priest and the other nuns and feeling like she was pregnant with a demonic-child. I think her killing the nun and everything she did before then was the most God-ly act in the entire run of the movie (which was only 90 or so minutes long, a true MIRACLE).

I really enjoyed this movie. I think Sweeney did a fantastic job. And I hope to see her in more horror/thriller movies like this because it was amazing.
