I Have Some Questions

In the new teen slasher movie, Totally Killer starring Kiernan Shipka and Olivia Holt. Shipka is sent back in time to stop a serial killer from destroying lives both in the 1980s and 2020s.

Initial Thoughts

I watched this movie a week after it came out on Amazon Prime Video. The only things I really knew about this movie was that Shipka goes back in time to stop a serial killer and save lives. I knew Olivia Holt plays a younger version of Shipka’s mother in the movie (played by Julie Bowen, from Modern Family) and that Mommy Dearest was a mean girl back in the day.

I thought it was entertaining - funny, it had emotion, and the characters made sense. I even liked how the movie knew I wouldn’t know the 2023 adults’ names, so instead of them saying ‘I’m Pam Miller’ it would show a quick image of Julie Bowen so the audience would know that that’s Shipka’s mom.

A Few Hours Later . . .

Then I had some trouble sleeping and I realized it was the movie. There were some things that were gnawing at me. (SPOILER TERRITORY!) This movie was a marriage between teen slasher movies and John Hughes movies. For example, the mean girls dressed like Molly Ringwald and all the kids in the 80s were sex crazed. Neither of these are bad but after the first girl in the 80s flashback is killed her friends instantly forget about her. The next day they’re talking about hosting a party. And they don’t think about locking doors or staying sober when there is a deranged killer on the loose! They literally lock Shipka out of a cabin in the woods at night because she was being a buzzkill. I think this movie was trying to be campy - but in campy movies all the characters are goofy and everyone is in on the joke.

The major problem I had with this movie was something Shipka’s character kept doing. That’s not to say she wasn’t great because she was amazing. But while her character was trapped in the 80s. If you watch a John Hughes movie today you are bound to find some or a lot of problems with them. You can say ‘you can’t say that’ to a TV screen as you’re watching Sixteen Candles as much as you want but it won’t change the characters or the time period. Let’s face it, the 80s weren’t that great (not that today’s world isn’t any better but you know what I’ms saying). ANYWAY . . . Shipka keeps saying to the 80s kids ‘you shouldn’t say that’ type comments anytime they say things like “Fat Trish” or “lessing out” (like lesbian). I’m not saying that that is okay to say, but it was exhausting anytime this would happen because it kept getting less and less funny.

Like most of my reviews, I’m not saying I didn’t like this movie. In fact, I could see myself watching it again. But if I do or if anyone watches it I suggest you do what I should’ve done - Don’t Think About It Too Much!
