Every year, new shows come into the wood-work. Either continuations (new seasons), adaptations of books, new series, mini-series, etc. But there are shows that I find myself re-watching that have been off the air or aren’t producing new episodes that I think are worth getting excited over. Here are 5 TV shows that I’ve been watching in 2023 that I think are phenomenal.
The Bear (Season 2)
If you are at all familiar with this FX original series’ fantastic season one, then prepare to be amazed with season two. While season one looks at this failing/run-down restaurant inherited by Jeremy Allen White after his brother’s passing, season two takes a look at what it takes to create a restaurant, the training that is necessary, and the bureaucratic busy-work that needs to be done. Every episode takes a look at each character and how they hone their skills by getting training from the very best that there is. If you don’t think this show is as incredible as I’m making it sound, just watch the Christmas episode and prepare to have your mind blown.
Great News
This comedy series ran from 2017 to 2018 on NBC and was created by Tracy Wigfield and executive produced by Wigfield and the incomparable Tina Fey. The shows centers around a woman who’s 60 year old mother decides to become an intern at her place of work a news studio in New York City where she is a producer. While the series is hilarious and does feel like a Fey-type comedy it does have moments where it takes a look at the news industry and how corrupt it can be.
The Other Black Girl
Based on a book of the same name, The Other Black Girl centers around Nella a black assistant working at a publishing firm who aspires to become a publisher one day in her increasingly white office. One day a new girl is hired ‘the other black girl’ Hazel, at first Nella and Hazel get along really well as Nella has finally found a peer who actually looks like her and has the same goals in life. But after an awkward incident with Nella, Nella’s boss, Hazel, and a powerful client of theirs Hazel’s true intentions begin to show.
Bridgerton
Am I the only that’s not really rooting for the Bridgerton family? I’m team Penelope Featherington all the way! I watched the entire series because I had never seen it before. I knew who ended up with who and some major plot details like the identity of Lady Whistledown, but I didn’t really know major character development. But after finishing season two, I have to say Penelope deserves better than her family and Eloise. I know that’s a really strong opinion to have, but watch the show and focus on Penelope and the fact that season 3 is her season. (I just hope she tells Eloise and Colin what is what!)
Mrs. Davis
Released earlier this year, this AI (artifical intelligence) centered mini-series takes a look at what life would be like if God was replaced with AI aka Mrs. Davis. A nun, played by Betty Gilpin, sets out to takedown Mrs. Davis, which she holds responsible for the death of her father and for making the world more vulnerable to technology. Quick sidenote: this series strangely brought me closer to religion (but if you’re not there yet watch it anyway, it’s awesome and filled with hilarious action sequences).
